Smart Transit System (STS) - Project Weekly Meeting #2

Need electronic copies of progress report 1. (Sent on June 6.)

Email Dr. Lu about website server. (Benson is working on this.)

Conduct detailed case studies on other transit systems (e.g. Winnipeg):

• What infrastructure is needed?
• What communication technologies are in use? (E.g. transmitter / receiver technology, RF, satellite, Bluetooth/WIFI/cellular technology, etc.?

How to deal with possible noise pollution? How to minimize it?

 Is direct communication between bus driver and smartphone allowed?

Is GPS on bus a problem in Victoria? (Controversial?)

Other features to consider:

• Help recover disaster and respond to emergency. (very good)
• Cooperate with cell phone providers to make phone plan add-ons. (very good)
• Connect the bus system to cab system. (worth consider)
• Warn traffic when a blind person presents. (worth consider)

Each one of us will conduct a research on a transit system and explore their communication technologies.

Deliverable by next Tuesday:

Prepare a detailed case study of the transit system of your interest. In your research, try to answer the questions brought up by Dr. Gebali.
